Case Study: Helping a Designated Business Prepare for Regulatory Engagement

17 December 2025 by Impact Professional Services

Impact Designated Business Case Study

Preparing for a meeting with the Isle of Man Financial Services Authority (IOMFSA) can feel daunting for any firm. But for some designated businesses with just a handful of clients and limited internal compliance resources, it can be especially challenging.

Recently, we supported an individual registered as a designated business who wanted reassurance that their compliance framework was aligned, robust, and ready for regulatory scrutiny. With no in-house compliance team, they recognised the value of bringing in independent expertise to ensure that nothing was overlooked.

Understanding the Client’s Challenge

Although their business was small, their regulatory obligations were not. As with all designated businesses on the Island, they are required to maintain documented policies, demonstrate effective risk assessments, keep accurate training records, and evidence that they are monitoring the business on an ongoing basis.

Ahead of their scheduled meeting with the IOMFSA, they asked us to step in and provide a thorough, pragmatic review – not only to help them prepare, but also to give them the confidence that they were walking into the meeting with a clear, consistent, regulator-ready compliance framework.

Our Approach

We began by reviewing the meeting agenda so that our support aligned precisely with what the regulator expected to discuss. We then carried out a detailed review of the firm’s compliance documentation, including:

  • Business Risk Assessment
  • Technology Risk Assessment
  • AML/CFT Manual
  • Compliance Monitoring Plan
  • Staff training records and refreshers

Each document was assessed against the requirements of the AML/CFT Code and wider regulatory expectations.

We focused on three key areas:

  1. Clarity and consistency
Ensuring the documents reflected the actual business model and were internally coherent – a common issue for smaller firms using historic or template-based documents.
  2. Regulator readiness
Organising key documents and preparing the client to speak confidently about their risk assessments, rationale, and control effectiveness.
  3. Practical, confidence-boosting guidance
We offered clear explanations, answered outstanding questions, and identified simple improvements that would make a strong impression during the meeting.

The Result

The client’s response speaks for itself:

⭐ “The work you’ve done is mind blowing.”
⭐ “Thanks again for your help, it’s been greatly appreciated.”

Not only did they walk into the meeting feeling prepared and supported, they also gained a clearer understanding of their own regulatory responsibilities and how to manage them effectively going forward.

Ongoing Support

We’ve since been engaged to assist with their annual Strix return, as well as to deliver refresher training on AML and other compliance topics to help them stay ahead of evolving expectations.

This is exactly why we do what we do — helping small firms punch above their weight and meet regulatory standards with confidence.
